چکیده

Based on a correlation analysis method, a subwaveform threshold retracker is developed and coded in FORTRAN for satellite altimetry to determine the leading edge and retracking gate, and to improve the precision of sea surface heights (SSHs) and gravity anomalies (GAs). Using ERS-1/ERM waveforms, the subwaveform threshold retracker outperforms full-waveform threshold retrackers at the tide gage Port Station. A direct comparison between retracked SSHs and in situ SSHs is made at tide gage Port Station. Here the subwaveform retracking improves SSH precision from 0.241 to 0.193 m, yielding an improvement percentage (IMP) of 20%. Using ERS-1/GM waveforms, the subwaveform threshold retracker outperforms the Beta-5 and full-waveform threshold retrackers over the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas (BAS) in the Antarctic Ocean. The standard deviations of raw and retracked SSHs are 0.157 and 0.070 and 1.836 and 0.220 m over the ice-free and ice-covered oceans, corresponding to IMPs of 54.4% and 88%, respectively. Use of retracking improves the precision of GAs by up to 46.6% when comparing altimeter-derived and shipborne GAs. & 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Improving Jason-2 Sea Surface Heights within 10 km Offshore by Retracking Decontaminated Waveforms

It is widely believed that altimetry-derived sea surface heights (SSHs) in coastal zones are seriously degraded due to land contamination in altimeter waveforms from non-marine surfaces or due to inhomogeneous sea state conditions. Spurious peaks superimposed in radar waveforms adversely impact waveform retracking and hence require tailored algorithms to mitigate this problem. Here, we present ...

Antarctic Ice Shelf Tide Modeling Using PALSAR Interferometry

The knowledge of ocean tides underneath permanently or seasonally sea ice covered ocean and ice shelves over Antarctica, is largely unknown. Significant amount of West Antarctic ice sheet melt is through the mechanism of basal melting and due to turbulent tidal mixing. Knowledge of the ice shelf grounding lines and their extent, are critical to accurately quantify ice sheet mass balance, and oc...

On the Performance of Cryosat-2 Sar Mode over Water Surfaces

This paper presents analyses of L1B waveforms in SAR mode and Low-Rate Mode (LRM) over water surfaces from numerical simulations from the CryoSat Mission Performance Simulator (CRYMPS) and from CryoSat-2 satellite measurements. This work was performed as part of the ESA project "Development of SAR Altimetry Studies and Applications over Ocean, Coastal zones and Inland waters (SAMOSA)". The proj...

Application of toPEX Altimetry for Solid Earth deformation Studies

This study demonstrates the use of satellite radar altimetry to detect solid Earth deformation signals such as Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA). Our study region covers moderately flat land surfaces seasonally covered by snow/ice/vegetation. The maximum solid Earth uplift of ~10 mm yr-1 is primarily due to the incomplete glacial isostatic rebound that occurs around Hudson Bay, North America. ...

Investigation of Geostrophic and Ekman Surface Current Using Satellite Altimetry Observations and Surface Wind in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea

The rise of satellite altimetry is a revolution in the ocean sciences. Due to its global coverage and its high resolution, altimetry classically outperforms in situ water level measurement. Ekman and geostrophic currents are large parts of the ocean’s current, playing a vital role in global climate variations. According to the classic oceanography, Ekman and geostrophic currents can be calculat...
